The World has Changed. It May Never be the Same Again.

Welcome to the May edition of Via Satellite. As countries around the world are practicing social distancing to contain the novel coronavirus pandemic, I assume a high number of our readers are working from home. I would like to start by wishing you, your families, loved ones, and your colleagues the best over the next few months as we navigate one of the most challenging times any of us have ever lived through. This is a very human tragedy unfolding before our eyes that is impacting everyone on some level.

It is a time when the satellite industry plays a unique and key role as we adjust to this new normal, no matter how long it might last. Satellites extend networks, they extend connectivity and allow people from all over the world to interact with one another. Never has this been more important. Satellite imagery gives us breathtaking views of our changing planet as the world shuts down, and shines a light on how a closed world impacts the climate. Satellite TV entertains our families and friends as we spend more time at home. It helps with supply chains around the world as we ship vast amounts of equipment to help the fight against coronavirus. It also helps with remote healthcare, which will be needed now more than ever. There are other examples of satellite’s importance, but in a global pandemic, where constant communication is vital, satellite’s role is at the front and center of things. So, I would also like to salute our community for what they are doing. They are making a difference. They will make a difference and we are very lucky to be part of an industry that does so much good work to benefit humanity.

While the world is a pretty scary place right now, we are using this issue to celebrate the satellite industry. We have exclusive interviews with the winners of our Executive of the Year (SEOTY), Satellite Technology of the Year (STOTY), and Startup Space awards, which were announced recently at SATELLITE. They are all really well deserved.

The role of our editorial team is also changing. We won’t be getting out much over the next few months, as most trade shows have been postponed or cancelled. However, we have big plans to inform, educate, and yes — even entertain you — over the next few months. We will be bringing exclusive video interviews, some virtual events, as well as a host of webinars and other things. We all feel it is an honor to serve this community and we look forward to doing this in some new exciting ways.

I end this note as I began it, by wishing you all the best. This is a challenging time for all of us. While the satellite industry is a huge part of our lives, we have come to realize that there are more important things in life. From all of us, stay safe, stay healthy, and we will meet again on the other side.
