The Dawn of Artificial Intelligence in Satellite

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has suddenly become a key talking point in our industry over the last few months. It will be interesting to see what impact AI will have on the satellite industry, as we enter a more automated, robotic era. It seems like the things we are talking about tech wise could be straight out of a sci-fi movie. The dawn of the robots is something I read about on a weekly basis now. It is both super scary but there could also be huge benefits. Who knows, maybe one day, the future editor of Via Satellite will not be human. Sounds farfetched but, not that long ago, autonomous cars sounded implausible as well and look where we are now.

But, how does that relate to satellite? It is clear building satellites is not something that can be rushed and these will remain complex pieces of technology. However, AI could speed up certain processes in the building and manufacturing of satellites, which could drive efficiencies and get these satellites launched much quicker. While we are very much at the start of the process, it will be fascinating to watch it develop.

Recently, I had the pleasure of being a guest of Carnival and SES as they looked to break a world record for satellite connectivity on board a cruise ship. You will be pleased that this intrepid editor showed he was the ultimate team player by going on a cruise ship for three days to witness and authenticate a world record. I would like to go on the record and say I am free for similar engagements, should the industry require a world class authenticator! In all seriousness, Carnival doesn’t see itself as a cruise company but rather as an experience company, with the goal of providing unforgettable memories to its customers. We have an exclusive behind the scenes look at this world record attempt.

Also this month, the various bright minds of NSR got together to pull the 10 things they learned from SATELLITE 2018 this year. I really like this article — it is simple (like me) and very easy to engage with.

We are also hoping you are enjoying the new, amazing ViaSatellite.com which we think is super cool. Not only are we delivering the best content in the industry, but also we now give you the best web site to read, watch and consume the content. Like Carnival, it is all about the experience… So, experience the best we have to offer and we will see you next month.

Oh, and by the way, for those who would prefer an automated editor, I aim to hang around for a good few years yet! VS
