Pushing the Boundaries for Satellite
Editor's note for the Asia 2017 edition of Via SatelliteApril 26th, 2017Yet again we are delighted to be partnering with Media Partners Asia (MPA) which puts on one of the best events in the region, Asia Pacific Pay TV Operators Summit (APOS), playing host to a number of broadcaster/pay-TV decision makers and influencers. It is one of the “must go to” events in the region for the satellite industry.
In this edition of Via Satellite Asia, we look at number of interesting areas that relate to the satellite industry in this continent. Adrienne Harebottle looks at the burgeoning smallsat arena in Asia and how the region could be one of the global leaders in smallsat development over the next few years.
A number of countries in Asia have huge populations and are massive markets within themselves. Certainly, when you look at DTH, India and Indonesia have seen explosive subscriber growth over the last few years, and thus leading to significant demands for satellite capacity. Another country that has been making a number of headlines recently is Myanmar. While it does not have the population size of some of these other countries in the region, the recent opening of the market presents huge opportunities for satellite, as well as telecoms players. Helen Jameson takes a closer, more in-depth look at Myanmar for us both in terms of pay-TV as well as telecoms services.
Finally, we look at OTT in Asia, which is a really hot topic in terms of broadcast. While there are a number of DTH success stories, OTT is beginning to have more of an impact and new players such as iflix are emerging, threatening the status quo. In our final feature, we talk to key broadcasters such as the BBC and Discovery about how they see the changing dynamics, and how OTT could impact some of the large DTH players in the region.
We have interviewed many local sources on the ground in Asia for this edition — from broadcasters to service providers to key organizations in the smallsat arena. We are committed to providing the best content to our audience. We hope you enjoy this edition. VS
