The Cybersecurity Threat Continues to Grow for Space

CyberSat returns very soon for its eighth edition as we look at what the satellite industry needs to do to keep its space assets safe. The event has gone from strength to strength and we have an all-star line up of speakers with the likes of the NRO, FAA, U.S. Space Force, United States Postal Service, NASA, and DHS all taking part.

What is interesting about this year is for the first time it is a two-track event, with a dedicated technology and space data track which will offer technical content to a growing cyber audience. It is one of the final big satellite events of the year.

This edition of Via Satellite has a very strong cyber theme as we look into the security threats against space assets. Shaun Waterman looks at how EO companies are now active targets for cyber attacks and how they defend against the growing threat. We have two columns specifically on the cyber threats to satellites and space assets. Clémence Poirier, a senior researcher for the Center for Security Studies (CSS) at ETH Zurich, has recently been researching the active threats to space assets. She writes a column for Via detailing the key findings of her research. It is a fantastic piece of research which emphasizes the scale of the problem.

Patrick Lin, from Cal Poly, talks about the ICARUS matrix and anticipating cyber threats. These are two thought-provoking pieces.

For the first time, we take a deep dive into the Canadian space industry. Anne Wainscott-Sargent talks to a number of key players about the history of satellite communications in Canada and how the commercial industry, civil government, and military are all investing in space capabilities.
